Sandhill Crane Students

Sandhill Crane Students

Steamboat Springs, CO

2021

This set of three sculptures depict a group of students from one angle and Sandhill Cranes from another. This project was exciting for several reasons; primarily, I like to reference the interdependence people (including the Ute and settlers after them) have with the local fauna and its migratory patterns. I would also like to draw attention to the Sandhill Crane nesting areas near the school and use them as an example of the many creatures that travel through the Steamboat Springs ecosystem. I believe the metaphor of migration is a useful tool to understand the process of education, as students come and go throughout the seasons and eventually leave the school for other adventures.
